Robots in the sky with diamonds

This was a series of photographs that I wanted to take last year, but just didn't get the chance in the run up to Christmas. 2010's photos would have had red and powder blue clouds, but 2011 brought white ones instead.

When I was designing these robots in Göteborg 2010, we had decided on a mechanical theme for LOD's Christmas exhibition. Robots were the first thing to pop into my head. I liked the concept of these little mechanical characters hanging in the air, with sparkling lights glittering and illuminating them like diamonds - and so the concept was born. Robots in the sky with diamonds. Best viewed with a cloud or two hanging in the background, for as we know, cloudy skies are a common sight on the West Coast.

Limited Edition

The brass birds are winging their way to Stockholm tomorrow and accompanying them are a few limited edition white and black birds. Hopefully they should arrive at LOD on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. I took this photograph before they got their red ribbons on, but they look almost as nice without.

Love Birds for Christmas

Here is a little preview of my Christmas decoration design for LOD's Jul Utställning which opens on Saturday 3rd December. These little birds are avaliable in stainless steel and in brass and are inspired by the theme of 'Wings'. Here's an excerpt from the vernissage kort just in case you didn't get one in your letter box.

Jag Flyger Till Dig

Christmas is fast approaching and yesterday 2011's tree decorations arrived in flat pack in preparation for the Christmas exhibition at Galleri LOD.

Our theme this year is 'wings' and I've chosen to make a little bird in flight. I'll be constructing these little creations later today and will let you see the result alongside colourful clouds for an inspiring twist to a traditional Christmas Tree.

It's been a while since I wrote.....

Yes it's been incredibly hectic at LOD since I last wrote. A lot of work and different kinds of commissions have been eating into my blogging time with a vengence, but today's the day to break that trend and report on what's been going on.

For a start the gallery's changed and we had a lovely 'Pre-Summer' vernissage on the 30th June in conjunction with Woha. Take a little look at LOD's Blog to see pictures of the event at www.lod.nu . During the summer months it's minimalism that rules at LOD

'Nothing To Declare' is a summer exhibition of sketch lights and objects based on materials that don't have monetary value but have qualities unique to the materials that have been used. Often the sketches and models that pre-date a design are more free and have a slightly different feel to them as one has worked quickly and with the confidence that comes without being restrained by the 'cost' of the material. This exhibition celebrates this aspect of design and Papillions De Nuit is my contribution - an industrial fluttering of butterflies to the flame in stainless steel.

My placemats and glass coasters are also on display. That's a collection that I'll shortly be telling you more about. It's nice to be back!

The stainless ´Papillions de Nuit´ have arrived.......

Yesterday the stainless butterflies arrived, and today I've literally bled for my work. Three plasters later and a pile of butterflies to file. What is it that they say? You've got to suffer to succeed, so the prognosis looks good for the outcome of this light! In some way I always find the 'leftovers' interesting. They are always overlooked unusual shapes that could find a new life?

I hope we're going to Belgrade so that this light will get a chance to shine. Maybe tomorrow we'll find out.

Springtime's colours have a hint of Steel.

Despite a few technical issues that need to sorted out before production, the prognosis for these springtime fledglings looks promising.  I formed these armbands to get a feeling for how two different thicknesses respond and wear - compiling a list of 'to dos' before the next round of testing.

Hello Stainless

I've been handsawing these Cherry Blossom Armbands in silver, but have always had the ambition to produce them in Stainless Steel. Stainless Steel is so strong and posseses such a beautiful understated industrial colour that I feel it needs to be brought into the spotlight. It lends itself well to small scale production which is the aim with these versions. Silver Cherry Blossom armbands will remain hand sawn, with that personal touch.

Today I recieved the first prototype of this model in Stainless steel which needs to be tested and modified. There's more in the pipeline with this collection, so watch this space. Fortsättning följer.
